Welcome to the 40th anniversary of the Digestive System Surgery Congress, founded by Professor Giorgio Palazzini.

The Congress was established in 1985 when the first disposable staples were presented.

On that occasion, two surgeries were performed in the operating room of the 3rd Surgical Clinic of Rome, a total gastrectomy and a rectal resection.

Given the strong innovative impact of these techniques, laparoscopic surgery arrived in Italy in 1990 with operations performed by Professor Croce and Professor Novellino.

To promote these new practices, initially met with strong resistance in the surgical community, we began organizing congresses featuring live broadcasts from operating rooms.

In 1990, we broadcast two cholecystomy surgeries live from the operating room of the Third Surgical Clinic at the Umberto Primo University Hospital.

This marked the beginning of our mission to spread this method and in 1991, with the rise of the new video transmission technologies, we connected three hospitals simultaneously.

the third surgical clinic in Rome, and Zingoni Hospital, broadcasting live on large screens

at the CNARC headquarters in Rome. Professor Palazzini's commitment began long ago. He has

always been a pioneer of innovation and scientific and technological progress. In 1993, he introduced

used 3D surgery for the first time worldwide.

That same year, the Congress expanded internationally, connecting with Japan and the United States.

From 1993 onward, the Congress broadened its focus to include other countries and new surgical

innovations, reaching 1999 when the first robotic system, the DaVinci, was presented

from the United States.

Due to the growing interest, the Congress moved to a larger location, the Auditorium

of Massimo, which seats 3,400 people, even though the space proved insufficient, as participants

often filled the theatre steps. The number of live connections also increased, with more screens and

live links added at each edition. During the 30th Congress, virtual reality was introduced,

used, continuing the tradition of Professor Palazzini's commitment to presenting cutting-edge

technologies. For several years, the Congress has also been streaming online, allowing those

unable to attend in person to follow the session remotely. On that occasion, over 3,000 users from

around the world connected live. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Congress was held

entirely online, with 85,000 people following across 16 live channels.

In 2021, the Congress was again streamed, this time with 100,000 users,

joining the 18 live streaming channels.

This upward trend culminated in 2024, with more than 200,000 viewers following the Congress.

For these reasons, the Congress has always welcomed prestigious collaboration with

Chinese surgery a global leader in minimally invasive digestive surgery

today this partnership looks to the future aiming to bring the most advanced

and safest techniques into operating rooms our goal is to strengthen

collaboration with Chinese surgery and we will be honored to have you join us

to comment on the procedures presented at the 36th Congress a union of
